Cheltenham Kuala Lumpur

Welcome to The Prep

Lower Primary

In Year 1 and Year 2, students build on the rich learning experiences they enjoyed in kindergarten. Our curriculum is primarily based on the Cambridge Primary Programme, thoughtfully adapted to align with the educational outcomes of Cheltenham College in the UK. We prioritize flexibility in our curriculum to nurture each child’s unique interests and needs.

Students are taught in mixed-ability classes, where activities are tailored to accommodate diverse academic levels and learning styles. With small class sizes, children benefit from a close-knit and supportive environment, allowing them to apply classroom concepts to independent and creative projects. Most subjects are taught by their class teacher, fostering a strong and familiar connection.

Each child sets personal achievement targets in collaboration with their teacher, and these goals are shared with parents to ensure a supportive learning journey. By the end of Year 2, students are well-prepared and confident to transition into Year 3 to 6, ready to embrace the challenges ahead.

School Day

At Cheltenham Kuala Lumpur, we recognize the importance of a comprehensive education, which is why we offer an extended school day until 3:30 PM, with additional optional activities available into the evening. While many schools conclude their day earlier, our thoughtfully designed schedule ensures that your child benefits from a truly all-rounded educational experience.

Our dynamic curriculum is complemented by an extensive extra-curricular program, allowing every student to explore interests and talents beyond the classroom. This holistic approach not only enhances academic learning but also fosters character development, teamwork skills, and self-confidence.

School Day Schedule

The school opens at 8:00 AM, and each day begins with a warm greeting from the Principal and senior staff at the school gates. Students are then guided directly to their classrooms, ready to start their day with enthusiasm.

School Hours: Monday to Friday | 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM

Life in Our Prep

At Cheltenham Kuala Lumpur, students in The Prep program grow into independent and curious learners, developing confidence in themselves and their surroundings.

Communications

We warmly welcome parents to be an active part of our school community. Each morning, we offer a flexible drop-off period, allowing your child to settle in comfortably while allowing you to connect with our staff and other parents.

To keep you informed about your child’s activities, we provide timetables and information boards outside each classroom. Additionally, our monthly e-newsletter highlights the joyful experiences your little ones are enjoying at school.

Regular coffee mornings are a great way to meet fellow parents, and our curriculum workshops offer valuable insights into what your child is learning in the classroom, equipping you with tools to reinforce their education at home.

Academic

We aim to foster a ‘growth’ mindset and a ‘can-do’ attitude, both inside and outside the classroom. While your child progresses through the Prep, we take personal pride in helping him or her to blossom. Children enter The Prep in Year 1, where our primary goal is to instil a lifelong love of learning. We achieve this by making subjects come alive. New topics often kick off with special immersion days featuring themed activities and dressing up, which encourage creativity and engagement. Students enjoy lessons in dedicated Prep facilities, providing a warm and familiar environment that allows them to fully embrace their subjects and build lasting friendships.

In The Prep, children are increasingly encouraged to take responsibility for their learning. Assessments become more structured, and students benefit from greater specialist teaching. While we primarily follow the Cambridge Primary Programme, we maintain the flexibility to personalize learning journeys, catering to individual interests and needs. Throughout this phase, we nurture curious minds and foster a fun, engaging atmosphere through thematic and project-based learning.

In Year 1 and 2, students are taught by their class teacher for most subjects within mixed-ability classes. Specialist teachers are introduced for subjects such as, Social Studies, languages, PE, and others.

Beyond the classroom, dedicated playtime and a wide range of clubs and activities provide children with ample opportunities to explore their interests and develop new skills.

Our subject specialist approach allows children to engage with a broad curriculum, whilst unlocking talents and discovering interests in particular topics. It also gives them the chance to expand their perceived academic boundaries in preparation for Cheltenham Secondary.

As they progress, children advance from the Cambridge Primary Programme to the Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme. We also encourage them to take greater levels of responsibility for organising themselves and for demonstrating leadership potential.

Pastoral Care

The health and wellbeing of our students is an integral part of school life.

Making sure students feel happy, safe, and supported at school is the most effective way to ensure they fulfil their potential.

Pastoral care is the responsibility of every adult in the school. Their commitment is to foster a genuine and familiar sense of belonging so that each child is known individually and feels secure in every endeavour. This also enables us to identify when a little extra care and attention may be needed and act immediately.

We provide in house counselling and nursing care. In addition, safeguarding will be part and parcel of everyday life.

Throughout the year we recognise such things as mental health awareness, antibullying and online safety.

Central to our pastoral care is the partnership we develop with families. When your child joins the school, we begin the process of engaging in a continuous dialogue with you to ensure that care is collaborative, proactive, and personal.
